While on patrol, two officers observed a large amount of smoke coming from a residential area. The officers responded to find a structure fire and heard a loud explosion upon exiting the patrol vehicle. The officers located an individual on the couch in the living room. After banging on the door and yelling, the male subject woke and came to the door. The officers began asking the subject questions but he did not respond. Finally, officers asked if there were other people inside the residence and the subject said his grandmother was inside. Meanwhile, the officers returned to the burning home and determined the house was empty.

The subject displayed objective symptoms of being under the influence and was uncooperative with the officers. The subject was too intoxicated to care for himself. He was arrested and transported to the County jail.

The Santa Clara Fire Department arrived on scene and extinguished the fire. Upon further investigation, a lit cigarette in the garbage can had ignited the fire.
