CASE NUMBER: 12-11078
INCIDENT: Officer Involved Shooting
DATE/TIME OF INCIDENT: Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at 11:17 pm
LOCATION: 1300 Block of Reeve Street, Santa Clara
SUSPECT: 41 year old male, resident of Santa Clara
On Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at 11:17 pm, Santa Clara Police officers responded to two 911 calls regarding family violence. A 41year old son was having an altercation with his 66 year old father inside their apartment. The responding officers mediated the family conflict. The officers’ initial efforts ended the altercation. Neither the father nor the son was injured. They did not request further police assistance.
As the officers began to leave the scene, they heard loud yelling from inside the same apartment. The officers immediately returned. Through the open front door, officers saw the father and son scuffling with each other. The son was armed with a knife. The son refused to follow repeated officer commands to drop the knife. The son, in very close proximity to his father, raised the knife in a threatening manner and moved toward his father. Fearing for the father’s life, three officers were forced to fire their weapons to prevent a lethal/fatal assault. The officers immediately called for emergency medical personnel. Paramedics pronounced the son dead at the scene. No other persons were injured.
The name of the son is being withheld until his identity is confirmed by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office. The involved officers are 10, 12, and 16 year veterans of the Santa Clara Police Department. Their names are being withheld at this time.
The investigation is on-going and being conducted jointly with the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact Detective Sergeant Todd Cummins at (408) 615-4813.
